奈米金颗粒拥有特殊的表面效应，可应用於催化各种化学反应，有优异的催化CO氧化反应活性。经研究发现，均匀地分散在催化剂载体上的金，具有很高的催化活性。载金催化剂可以迅速地把一氧化碳氧化成二氧化碳、将氮氧化物还原。金触媒的微细结构与制备条件关系密切，除可利用制备条件的控制，及特殊的表面化学技术，可在奈米金属微粒外涂布一层化学连结分子，为奈米微粒进行表面修饰之工作。选择适当之连结分子，使奈米金属微粒外层裸露不同性质只官能基，则进一步与其他生物分子如抗体、蛋白质或DNA结合，达到以奈米金属微粒作生物分子目标。 制成不同特性的金触媒，其潜在应用包括汽机车的触媒转化器、一氧化碳感测器、燃料电池、工业涂料等，能使CO、NOx和碳氢化合物等废弃物，转换成不具毒性如CO2、N2等气体。同时其特殊之热力学性质亦使奈米金属熔点降低，有效减低其烧结温度。
